GIVE US YOUR POOR BEACON'S HAND SCHOLARSHIP

In 2008, The UMass Boston Chancellor’s Office and Give US Your Poor partnered to offer the first annual Give US Your Poor Beacon’s Hand Scholarship. This 4-year scholarship is awarded each year to a UMass Boston student that has experienced homelessness and is committed to using his/her university degree to go on to become a positive force in our community. Candidates must be working towards a degree and have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.3.

The Give US Your Poor Beacon’s Hand Scholarship grew out of another inspiring act. Kyla Middleton was in elementary school when her family became homeless. Over the course of the following year, while her family fought to settle themselves back into a home, Kyla never missed a single day of school. Kyla’s strength through adversity and determination to excel in school caught the attention of the Horatio Alger Association. During a break in the music at the “Give US Your Poor Concert for the Homeless” put on with The Office of Boston’s Mayor Menino, the Horatio Alger Association rewarded Kyla’s achievements with a $20,000 college scholarship. Chancellor Keith Motley, of UMass Boston, was so inspired by Kyla’s story and the Horatio Alger Association’s support that he partnered with us to launch the Give US Your Poor Beacon’s Hand Scholarship.

The inaugural Give US Your Poor Beacon's Hand Scholarship Recipient was Jeffrey Morales.
