Dan Zanes

Dan Zanes and Kyla Middleton record
"Boll Weevil" for Give Us Your Poor CD

FEB 2--The next day would start early, so Bryan Howe and Michael Botelho, cinematographers, arrived in Wayland, MA at 10:30 pm per chance to get a little extra sleep before the early morning drive to NY.  Of course they should have gone right to sleep but stayed up like schoolboys, chatting into the night.  Six am came early.

The ride to Festival Five Recording Studios in Brooklyn was long but filled with anticipation.  They planned to meet Kyla Middleton (age 11) and her mother, Cheryl, who had flown up the night before.  Besides being a talented family (both sing like angels), they are courageous advocates to end homelessness, often sharing their past personal experience of homelessness.

Sometimes they testify at a Homes for Families conference, sometimes at the State House. But this trip was not about policy or political action.  This trip to Brooklyn was a matter of the heart, using the language of the soul--music.  Dan Zanes, former front man of the rock and roll band, the Del Fuegos, and current front man of Dan Zanes and Friends, graciously offered to open his home studio and date book to record with Kyla.  He did so after hearing a demo she recorded for the Give Us Your Poor benefit CD.  Dan knows rock and roll and folk music.  His musical godfather, and a deep source of inspiration, is Huddie Ledbetter, better known as "Leadbelly".

They chose to sing a Leadbelly song called "Boll Weevil", a metaphor about the pesky bug that tortured cotton crops of the past.  The chorus goes, "he's lookin' for a home, he's lookin' for a home."

Dan and Kyla were pleasantly surprised to hear their voice blend so well.  Each sings with soul in a very personal manner and the combination worked.  The power of their voices, the tender arrangement that Dan chose, a 100-year-old pump organ played tastefully by engineer Rob Friedman, with recording help from Jerry Jaworski, and knee clapping, made for an organic, rich song.  In fact, the effect had eyes welling up the first time they ran through the song.  Somehow, maybe it was the Leadbelly song, maybe the heartfelt approach by Dan, the lifelong professional, and Kyla, the up and coming girl who had no home for a while, they achieved a moment of grace.  We can't wait for you to hear it!

Our tired cinematographers, Bryan and Mike, captured it all on film along with a brief interview with the singers afterwards.  Just in time too as Kyla was really ready for food!

They loaded up their cameras and got right back on the road for the 4 plus hour ride back to Massachusetts. No break, hardly any money.  It was a great day, but they wanted to get home.

The song will be released as part of the Give Us Your Poor CD created in conjunction with Appleseed Recordings, Berklee College of Music Continuing Education, and participating homeless and celebrity musicians.
